Official Update on Operations

Althouh Oxfam is succesffuly currently running its operating in Mcgilldishu and Camp 8, the organization is in need for continuous support to further the quantity and quality of its emergency aid provision in the coming months.
Transportation, delivery and staff safety
The recent Icasian fishing boat that was overtaken by rebels and which led to a long artillery exchange is a reminder of the difficulty of using the sea and the port for humanitarian purposes in Mcgilldishu. Though the airport is also dangerous because often shelled by rebels, Oxfam, along with other organizations like CARE, believe that the airport remains the best alternative. Although Mcgilldishu is identified as the main area in urgent need of protection and support, this pattern of insecurity is coherent throughout the country. All the international organizations present in Brynania have identified safe delivery and passage of aid ressources as well as security for our staff as fundamental for the overall success of the humanitarian effort. We need your organization’s aid and funds to both establish a military secured perimeter around airports and in partnership with other organization, have convoys securing delivery to relief stations.
Mcgilldishu
We need your support to continue implementing these programs and reaching the 600,000 presently in need in Mcgilldishu. Oxfam is undertaking a dual approach to provide emergency medical aid, food and water supplies in the city.
-       Focus on health: Oxfam is prioritizing programs promoting health in Mcgilldishu where many people have been injured by political violence in the area.
o   1 Emergency care clinic is delivering emergency operations and over the counter medications. Oxfam medical staff are overseeing these operations.
o   3 Mobile health units + Outreach and vaccination: vans are going around the city delivering medical supplies, vaccination to mitigate the propagation diseases and medications. These health units are also giving information about health measures and sanitary practices.
o   Local people involvement. Because Oxfam understands the importance of local involvement and empowerment in stabilizing conflict situations, Oxfam medical team is recruiting and re-training nurses and doctors to help run the clinic and the mobile health units. This can also be a way of establishing integration and networking with local communities (this objective will be integrated in our longer-term planning).
We need your funds to implement these operations!

-       Focus on Food and Water:
o   2 Distribution centers: one located with the emergency care clinic and the other  in an area assessed in greatest need, in the district of Dishudishu. We are distributing bottled water and water sanitation tablets as well as basic food high in fiber, vitamins and fat.
o   The Brynanian populations need your support!
We have established a partnership with CARE in Mcgilldishu in order for the humanitarian effort to be well coordinated and cover all the needs of populations on the ground with great effectiveness and results.
Providing stability in Mcgilldishu is very significant politically and critical for the achievement of peace in the country. Oxfam believes that all humanitarian efforts and its own provision of basic supplies and empowerment of the local populations through various its programs will reduce frustration and violence and ultimately foster stability in this very strategic region. Oxfam therefore believes that it is deeply in the interest of the international community to participate in any way that they can to the humanitarian effort.

Camp 8, Gamma Province
Overcrowding in the most important issue in Camp 8, it was initially designed to welcome 20,000 people but has swollen to a shanty-town of more than 80,000. Oxfam’s programs are thus targeting overcrowding’s negative consequences and need funds to continue implementing them on a larger scale.
-       Focus on Infrastructure and electricity:
o   Objective is 5,000 uber houses and 10,000 tents in the immediate term: following the ICRC’s successful initiative of establishing uber houses within the camp, Oxfam has also started building shelters in the form of uber houses and tents.
§  Adressing gender inequality:  To adress women insecurity and ensure the equal distribution of temporary housing, these temporary structures are to be divided with special areas for women and their children. These areas also require security in the form of internal policing and watch patrols. In order to empower local populations, increase well-being and reduce expenses, Oxfam will be providing a short training local forces to take on those tasks (this objective will be integrated in our longer-term planning).
Brynanians need your donations!

-       Focus on health:
o   1 Emergency care clinic delivering emergency operations and over the counter medications. Oxfam medical staff is overseeing these operations.
o   2 smaller outreach and vaccination units where basic supplies is provided as well as information about health measures and sanitary practices.
o   Local people involvement: again, because Oxfam understands the importance of local involvement and empowerment in stabilizing conflict situations, Oxfam medical team will be recruiting and re-training nurses and doctors to help run the clinic and the mobile health units.
We need your support to run these operations!

   -       We will be assisting the work of the UN WFP once they are deployed:
o   2 Distribution centers will be distributing bottled water and water sanitation tablets as well as basic food high in fiber, vitamins and fat. These supplies will be distributed equally by doing registration per family.

Oxfam also needs your continuous support to continue its advocacy to local and international governments for more social protection on the behalf of vulnerable and suffering populations affected by the conflict.
We believe that through these actions there is a distinct window of opportunity to ensure durable peace in Brynania.
Please act responsibly and donate generously.
